The Illusion of Choice
Take a good look at the photo below.
It's pretty self-explanatory. There are so many brands, yet there are only a handful of conglomerates who actually own these brands. You ask, what does this have to do with web hosting? We'll get to that in a second.
Endurance International Group (EIG)
There is a subtle recurring theme in the web hosting industry, and that is a huge percentage of web hosting companies are not actually owned by themselves. These web hosting companies are subcompanies or sub brands of a company called Endurance International Group or EIG.
Unlike the physical products in the above infographic however, these hosting brands don't set themselves apart from each other. No, there is no tastier web host. There is no sugar-free option. They are all the same in terms of performance (hint: the worst in the industry) and they are all the same in terms of customer support (hint: also the worst in the industry).
Most if not all their brands share the same customer service agents who are outsourced and have no real knowledge in web hosting. All their responses are scripted, canned, and they select the most appropriate response based on the contents of your question. Have a very specific issue that needs to be resolved? Tough luck, because the EIG customer support agent you're going to be assigned to will be assigned to at least 10 other customers and does not have the technical knowledge required to assist you.
Don't Fall for Their Trap!
The way EIG works is simple. First, they get you to sign up for one of their companies. When you realize you've chosen a bad service provider, you search Google for a replacement. Unbeknownst to you, you've chosen yet another EIG brand. And the cycle goes on and on and on...
Make sure to get to the bottom of this page to find out which hosts are under the EIG umbrella so you can take measures to avoid them!
Real Customers, Real Frustrations
We've consolidated some tweets and reviews of real customers of some of EIG's brands. Read them and see why you shouldn't even begin to consider any of their hosting brands.
So clearly I need to move everything off of @HostGator— Fatherhood: Reloaded (@fatherreloaded) May 21, 2021
The up and down of the sites has become ridiculous!
And it’s not due to resource usage, just unreliable servers.
@fatcow @FatCowSupport Customer sites dropped offline today. https://t.co/6jvd3osRSy was offline, too. Not a peep from you. Now https://t.co/Tp14ysHKM8 is back online but customer site still says "This site is under development". Content disappeared.— Sean Nelson (@seannelson) April 14, 2021
Status update please?
@bluehostsupport 3 days of contacting CS because of issues with SpamExperts to be told that still being worked on without an ETA. Greatly disappointed in BH's ability to support functionality.— Marion M. Chamberlain (@marionchamberla) May 20, 2021
@HostGator @HGSupport My PHP scripts that use cURL for HTTP requests are giving timeout responses today after working fine for 2 years. Called customer support twice. Didn't get ANY help! Not a bit. Tech support doesn't understand the words PHP and cURL. Very unhappy customer! :(— Bruce Liebknecht (@BruceLiebknecht) May 21, 2021
@site5support @Site5 2/ Hours on chat to no avail. What a mess you are. You repeat the same thing over and over and never take full responsibility of the damage you do. When it is time to collect money you suddenly seem to know what you are doing by charging us w/o authorization.— A&A Holidays, Ltd. (@aaholidays1) January 12, 2021
I have the same problem with @Site5! I believe it's the fact that EIG own's them both. When I was researching a change in hosting, this fact came up as a con.— Eric Francis Harnden (@quintessential) April 14, 2021
Hi hostGator, I just purchased a shared hosting plan on 19-05-2021 and the experience as a first time user is damn bad. Its been two days i am not even able to login to the portal and it seems your portal is down or you are not genuine to let people login after they paid you.— Faisal Saleem (@faisal_saleem) May 21, 2021
